Once its gone its gone!
Open Letter April 2008
Following over 40 years of successful trading, Boons is closing down shortly. Welwyn Garden is not the only town to lose its Art shop. Up and down the country in places such as Bletchley, Milton Keynes, Hemel Hempstead, Reading, Maidstone, Felixstowe and St Albans to name just a few, the established Art / Craft shops have ceased to trade as a direct result of competition from Internet based sellers, multi-site supermarkets, big increases in trading costs and other modern phenomena.
So, to our many loyal and regular customers; sorry you are going to lose us, we carried on for as long as we could and we thank you so much for your custom which for some of you we know has been for a period of getting on for 40 years. When we are gone (but not before!) we recommend that you seek out the products you know and love at one of the following traders who are still actively trading. These being Berkhamsted Arts & Crafts, Hertfordshire Graphics in Hertford and Tim’s in Hitchin. We are confident you will find good service and product at each of these businesses.
To the irregular customer: when you next run out of white oil paint or a No 2 water colour brush and you have to travel miles to find it, think about the times in the past you didn’t support us. We suggest you start making more of an effort to spend your pounds locally, be it with the florist, curtain shop, newsagent, bakers or the pet shop. Your local traders need you, use them or lose them too. Unless that is you like your town being populated only by coffee shops, estate agents, hairdressers and mobile phone shops. However it could be worse, many UK towns alas are already saddled with many empty shops and charity shops e.g. Dunstable and Bletchley. At least here in Welwyn Garden you can drink some nice coffee, whilst contemplating buying that expensive house, during a mobile phone call to your best mate who has just had a new hair do!
To our neighbours: it has been great working alongside you and good luck for the future.
To our Landlords: sorry we are not going to be signing a new lease, but the proposed 50% increase in rent this Summer in addition to the already 40% increased service charge these past couple of years is simply too much for us, we are sure you understand! …. .goodbye.
To the politicians: do you not see what is happening? Start making decisions that help promote the vitality of our town centres for small traders as well as the multi-nationals and halt the march to a moribund desert of commercial and cultural life. Start acting like the public servants you were elected to be and not leaders of organisations that are hell bent it seems on creating efficient profit centres at the expense of the population. For example…. car parking charges and enforcement regimes, why do you think ‘ out of town centres’ are relatively successful? their offering of so called ‘free’ parking is a major factor in the decline of our countries traditional town centres.
To the bargain hunters: Our shop has many genuine bargains in stock now, make hay whilst the Sun is shining, because once its gone it’s gone!!
To the previous owners of Boons, from the mid 1960’s to 2003, Mick and Jean Baylis. Well done for paving the way for an extra 5 years of trading, your commercial understanding then gave extended benefit to many people, not least the loyal customers of Welwyn Garden.
It’s been nice doing business with you.
Yours faithfully,
The management and staff, Boons Welwyn Garden City
